The team from Lake Ceresio is the Swiss Champion U15 after beating Aquastar 8 to 7 in a thrilling final.

The tournament was relocated at the last minute from Geneva to Trevano’s 11-meter-wide indoor pool because neither of the organizing teams, Carouge and Geneva, qualified for the Final 6 tournament.

The tournament featured many close games. During the quarterfinals, SC Horgen endangered Lausanne’s chances of continuing in the tournament. The game ended in Lausanne’s favor after penalty shots.

SM Zürich was able to beat CN Nyon 10 to 8 thanks to six goals from Giorgio Ciani Romera.

We turned luck on our side, playing with great will and determination.

Michele Gamberini – Lugano Aquatics

wball.news talked with the head coach of Lugano, Michele Gamberini.

Michele Gamberini: it was a great final tournament, with high rhythm and intensity leading to many even games. I want to congratulate all the other teams that are showing great water polo and many interesting youth athletes. We played an intense semifinal against Lausanne that ended with penalty shots.

wball.news: how did you prepare your team for the final against Aquastar, who beat SM Zürich 10 to 7 in the semifinals?
Michele Gamberini: I was a bit worried about an “involution” of my team not being convinced and focused. I worked on the physical and mental aspects, putting the team under pressure in the last week of practice. They then approached the games more relaxed. We turned luck on our side, playing with great will and determination.

We definitely need more games at this level that are distributed evenly over the year.

Michele Gamberini – Lugano Aquatics

wball.news: you coached in Italy as well. What should we do to increase our level of youth water polo?
Michele Gamberini: we definitely need more games at this level that are distributed evenly over the year. There are many good athletes and coaches, but we need to play more often if we want to let the Swiss water polo movement grow.

wball.news: how is the situation with the youth teams at Lugano Aquatics?
Michele Gamberini: overall, we have a good number of players, but we need to work more on the selection from the bottom. U11 players must be better prepared for swimming before joining water polo.
