Spain won in a dramatic final against the host, breaking all dreams of the Croatian fans who assisted the final at the Swimming Pool Mladost in Zabreb.
The game was going in favor of the Croatian team, which led by 10 to 8 at the end of the third quarter.
At this point, David Martin, the head coach of the Iberic team, decided to substitute starting goalkeeper Unai Aguirre with Eduardo Lorrio. This proved to be a great move as Lorrio finished the game undefeated.
Spain started to get better and better in the game and were able to equalize with goals from Bernat Sanahuja on man-up and Alvaro Granados from a six-meter shot.
It was Granados again 48 seconds before the end who saw free room in the Croatian defense to drive and perform a spectacular backhand goal.
Croatia had a last chance after the exclusion of Alberto Munnariz, but Spain was able to block the last shot from Loren Fatovic.
