Kreuzlingen wins the 10th Swiss Cup title in the club’s history. It’s a remarkable achievement for a club that was promoted to the NLA in 1995 and became one of the powerhouses in Swiss water polo in the early years of the current century.
The event hosted by Horgen was very positive, with good attendance and ideal weather conditions, and saw the two teams currently on the top of the NLA ranking facing each other.
The team is our strength. Even after the retirement of key players like Pablo Carballo and Jan Buob, we can form a core team and go with this team through hard times, which makes us stronger.
Robin Pleyer – team captain SC Kreuzlingen
Game Summary
Kreuzlingen started the game very focused and took advantage of the changes at their disposal. Joel Herzog opened with a goal from the left-wing position after a counterattack. Gabor Turzai scored again with a well-placed penalty shot and later brought the score to 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
This was the moment where a reaction from the home team was expected, but the opposite happened. Robin Pleyer scored after a steal, and Simon Geiser used the man-up situation to bring the Kreuzlingen into an ideal position of 5-0.
Oskar Kieloch finally scored in a counterattack, followed by Philipp Herzog with a well-placed shot in man up (5-2), showing that Horgen is not beaten yet.
In the next phase, both teams scored like in a tennis game: first Robin Player (6-2) with a penalty shot, then Marko Manojlovic from the post with a superb assist from Julian Osinski, and Pleyer again taking advantage of some naive defensive errors of the Horgen team.
The game became open again with Horgen scoring three goals in a row: first with a well-placed shot from Greg Enloy, then with Domonkos Szer following a long pass from Manojlovic and Benjamin Redder with a lot of free space due to Kreuzlingen doubling Manojlovic on the center position for the 8-7 goal.
When the game becomes problematic, the best players show their class. Robin Pleyer could trick goalkeeper Pietro Gazzini with a beautiful lob, followed by five other goals from Joel Herzog, Turzai, Yves Herzog, Veit Albers, and the talented and young lefthander Benjamin Pfister setting the final result to 13-6.
I didn’t like the rhythm we showed in the first NLA game against Horgen. We have a young team with a good bench, so I expect this to be our trademark and keep it high. It predicted this game to be tough, even with Peter Bjelajac from Horgen missing.
Milan Petrovic – head coach SC Kreuzlingen
Conclusion
Kreuzlingen showed their experience and determination to remain on top of the game. Not only did they have a furious start, but they could close the game once Horgen started to gain momentum. On the other side, the newly formed team of Horgen showed a very good moment in the second quarter when they came back from the initial 5-0 break. The absence of their captain Petar Bjelajac could have played more of a role than anticipated. We are already looking forward to the next match, where the two teams will face each other on June 6th in Kreuzlingen.
We need to gain experience in such knock-out games. We need to lose these games to learn to win them.
