The U15 final four tournament was held in the open swimming pool of Carona. The town on the top of mount San Salvatore was chosen to host the tournament that determined the best team in Switzerland at the U15 level.
The four teams that qualified over three rounds were Lausanne Aquatique, SC Kreuzlingen, SV Basel, and the locals of Lugano Aquatics. Interestingly, the U15 final tournament is the only one played as a single round-robin instead of the usual knock-out mode we are used to see in all other youth competitions.
The undisputed tournament favorite was Lausanne, which won all games in the qualification rounds. The other teams were considered even as all remaining finalists lost points among each other.
The unofficial final in the tournament was the game between Lausanne and Kreuzlingen after both teams beat Lugano and Basel, respectively. The match started with Lausanne taking the lead in the first half with a partial score of 6-3. In the middle of the third quarter, one of Lausanne’s key players, Daniel Dongo, was ejected due to misconduct. This gave Kreuzlingen some confidence, and the team of Lake Constance was not only able to get back into the game by equalizing to 7-7, but Claas Von der Geest also scored was could be the winning goal 32 seconds before the end. Csanad Berces of Lausanne scored the eighth goal for his team 13 seconds later. The game ended with a draw.
At this point, Lausanne and Kreuzlingen had the same number of points after two games, with one match to be played each.
What came in Lausanne’s favor was the unexpected win of Lugano against Kreuzlingen. Lars Rasmussen of Lugano scored the winning goal one second before the end of the match.
As Lausanne won 6-4 against Basel after a great last quarter, it became the undisputed U15 Swiss Champion, an outstanding achievement for the team of Canton Vaud.
The team, coached and trained by the two Hungarian brothers Tamas and Zoltan Hyc, was the best team over the entire season and ended it without a single loss.
A lot of credit also goes to the contestants that made it hard for Lausanne until the end.
Winning a youth league in Switzerland for a team from the Romandie is a significant event. This result is also amplified by the second place of Lausanne in the U11 category and by their U13 team qualifying for the final six tournaments.
It resonates very well with Lausanne’s goals for the future to build a water polo movement and qualify for the NLA in the next 2-3 years, as we covered during our interview with Zoltan Hyc.
The win of the U15 Championship proves that they are definitely on the right path and will have a solid base of players by then.
