Following the suspension of Goran Sablic, Swiss Waterpolo appointed new head coaches to cover the open coaching position for the men’s team and U19, U17, and U15 categories.
Jonathan Del Galdo is the new coach of the first men’s team. Del Galdo is mainly known for his work as an assistant coach at Pro Recco and as head coach with outstanding results in his youth team Bogliasco and, more recently, in Quinto.
In addition to his role as national team coach, Del Galdo will continue to manage the NLA team of Lugano.
Benjamin Redder will manage the U19 and U17 national teams. Redder is best known for his successes as a player and coach of SC Kreuzlingen, most recently for the gold medal at the U17 Championship with SC Horgen in 2023. Redder will remain in his role as role of Chief Education for Swiss Waterpolo until end of the year and he already ended in his role as head youth coach in Horgen last summer.
Redder has an arduous task ahead of him with the qualifiers for the U19 European Championships in March 2024.
Benjamin Redder commented to wball.ch: “Our U19 team is very young. Only three to four players were born in 2005, which makes a big difference at this level. We will have two trainings in Sursee over the next month where I will select the best 15 players. This team will prepare over three weekends in Lugano, Kreuzlingen, and Geneva, where we will play friendly matches. After this phase, I will select the 13 players for the qualifiers. All players are fully motivated but lack experience in the Swiss National League. Therefore, my priority is building a group that relies on each other, fights together, and identifies and acts as a real team.”

Benjamin Radder, head coach Swiss National Team U17 and U19
Zoltan Hyc, who already let the team at the European Championships U15 in Podgorica this summer, will coach the U15 National Team.
Hyc is one of the masterminds of the renaissance of water polo in Lausanne, showing excellent results in all youth categories for a city that was never known for its water polo tradition.
With those choices, Swiss Waterpolo changed direction, appointing exclusively coaches already active in Switzerland who perfectly know the Swiss Championship in their category.
Vladimir Bajkovic remains the head coach of the women’s national teams.
