Recap
Facing off against a well-rested Swedish squad in their second game of the day, Switzerland found themselves immediately challenged. Sweden wasted no time, storming into the lead with a resounding score of 8-2 within the first eleven minutes of play.
Key to Sweden’s success were standout performances from two of their players. Landon Akerstrom, a freshman from UC San Diego Tritons, with five goals. Alongside him, center forward Ivan Dimic, hailing from Stockholm’s SPIF Vattenpolo, made his mark with four goals and crucial man-exclusion plays.
However, Switzerland demonstrated resilience and determination, and they mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 10-8 by the third quarter. Despite Switzerland’s efforts, Sweden maintained control of the game, extending their lead to a final margin of 16-11.
Swiss head coach Benjamin Redder commented to wball.ch: “We burned a lot of energy in a decisive match against Slovenia this morning. Evidently, the recovery time was not enough to play against a fresh team from Sweden. We had higher goals, and we have to digest this defeat, but we will come back stronger.”
