Uroš Stevanović, a well-known figure in Serbian water polo and the head coach of the Olympic Champion, spoke out against the new rules in water polo in a recent interview with Danas. As Stevanović put it, the changes were “ugly and unwatchable,” which shows that many coaches and judges in the sport are unhappy with them.
Stevanović said that the process of putting these new rules into place didn’t involve enough consultation with professionals in the field. He also said that the decision-making process had been heavily influenced by certain interest groups, mainly focusing on Hungary and indirectly naming Tamas Molnar as Chairman of the World Aquatics Technical Water Polo Committee.
Stevanović says that Hungary seems to be in favor of the new rules so that they can get an edge over their competitors. Stevanović stressed the importance of using a thorough expert study instead of just using statistics, which were criticized after the Junior World Championship.
